Statement prepared by Dr. Michael D. Levi, Ph.D.
(Professor of Health Sciences)
Equine Elite Labs Antimicrobial
products are a non-toxic formulation which are designed specifically to
protect animals and handlers from the possibility of contracting infections
in their respective environments. This would include all major classes of
pathogenic (disease causing) microorganisms including viruses, bacteria and
fungus.
These unique proprietary mixtures of
extremely effective compounds (quaternary components like benzalkonium
chloride and quaternium 12) provide the superb action which
clearly sets this formulation apart from other currently used products.
Unlike many other formulations that contain providone iodine, which
after continued use produce a drying, irritating effect on the skin,
these formulations have been shown in laboratory tests to be more effective
in killing resistant bacterial strains, yet at the same time keeping the
area of concern soft and moist, even with repeated daily use for the
animal and handler.
I've been asked many times to explain in
layman's terms, just how this process of killing microbes occurs. These
solutions work on what we'll call the positive and negative charge system.
Let's use the example of a car battery and say that the solution is the
positive charge and the microbes the negative charge. We are all aware of
what occurs when the two ends of the cables touch one another.... POW!!!
The shell of the organism is broken open by the "Shock", spilling out its
life and therefore killing it. This is what is happening millions of times
over when the solution comes in contact with the microorganisms.
The next step is the healing process. It
begins when the irritation, which is caused by the microorganisms, stops.
Now the conditioners and healing moisturizers can do their job in bringing
the affected area back to its normal healthy state.
Same technology.... different
formulations. It needs to be pointed out that many different products for
specific uses are available with this NEW technology as was developed for
Equine Elite Labs.
Dr. Levi's Comments regarding Proud
Flesh
The issue of the appearance or
development of what is known as "Proud Flesh Syndrome", according to
the reports and data we are receiving from users of our Equine Relief
Antimicrobial products is significantly reduced or essentially absent
in the healing phase of the dermally ill or injured animals being observed.
I offer the following rational
explanation as to why this is probably occurring: Our antimicrobial skin
products contain a proprietary blend of synergistic ingredients including
several quaternary compounds and complementary emollients plus carrier
surfactants, which encourage and allow for maximum contact of the product to
the area or surface being treated.
As a result:
1) A wide variety of microbes are
significantly reduced
2) Swelling or inflammation is attenuated
or appreciably reduced
3) Dermal tissue with its respective
"Structural Blueprint" or DNA is allowed to "Seal and Heal"
appropriately without significant loss of function or
production of scar tissue.
By maximally encouraging a tissue
environment that provides for more rapid healing of a given tissue, the
opportunity for the "Proud Flesh Syndrome" is appreciably minimized.
As a side note, these products are
successfully employed on the dermis along with appropriate dressing
following podiatric surgeries to prevent infection and encourage rapid
healing.
In conclusion, providing homeostasis in a
given tissue site is the goal of our products. Synergism is our philosophy
for their effectiveness.
The Equine Relief Antimicrobial technology,
originally developed for hospitals, doctors and
laboratories
is now incorporated into a wide variety of
equine and canine products
Here's a thought to consider:
When you think about it, our horses and
dogs lay, sleep and walk on the ground (dirt, sand & grass).
A significant amount of their skin problems are quite simply
associated with the bacteria and fungus picked up from their environment.
Bacteria can cause itching (tail, mane, full body and/or hot spots)
as well as infection (on broken tissue such as wounds or open lesions).
Fungus is rooted deeper in the dermal
layers which makes it harder to reach and eradicate.
Our Gentle Broad Spectrum Antimicrobial
solutions will effectively eliminate most topical bacteria on contact....
and penetrate to reach fungus below the skin surface.
What is the difference between our products and others on the market?
Though they are mostly based on the same
PENETRATING formula, there are varying percentages of active ingredients
(better for specific situations) with a few different formulas of carrier
agents. Some of the other products on the market will eliminate bacteria
that they can touch...many will damage, sting or irritate the skin to do
so... but we haven't found any that penetrate into the tissue of the skin
the way the Equine Relief Antimicrobials are formulated to do!
That is why we say these solutions will
Penetrate to eliminate 99.9% of bacteria, fungus and topical viruses while
soothing and softening the skin.
