dead bird should be reported to the local health department. Use
gloves to handle dead birds or use an implement, such as a shovel.

Now, more than ever, there is a
significant public health concern about mosquito transmitted diseases to
humans and pets. The West Nile Virus has been found in over 30 states in
the U.S. The disease exploded in the year 2002 causing over 200 deaths
and over 3,000 cases of the disease. Mosquitoes can also transmit
diseases such as Equine Encephalitis and
heartworm to dogs and cats.
The main culprit for the West Nile Virus is Calex pip/ens,
a species of mosquito typically found in foul, stagnant water. Anything
that may hold water, such as old tires, bird baths, rain barrels and
abandoned pools need pro-active treatment to limit breeding. Anopheles
mosquitoes, which transmit malaria, breed in water that is relatively
clear all of the time. Eastern Equine Encephalitis and other
encephalitises are transmitted by Aedes vexans, Ochierotatus soilcitans
and Coquillettidia perturbans. These 3 mosquitoes breed in temporary rain
pools, in salt marshes and freshwater cattail swamps. The Aedes aegypti
breeds in small, artificial containers of water.
At the same time, there is a heightened public awareness to the
contamination of water resources from the use of toxic pesticides, which
usually have adverse affects on the environment. Recently, the E.P.A has
banned the popular pesticides chlorpyrifos (Dursban) and diazinion. The
public is now growing resistant to the repeated use of chemical
pesticides. Additionally, it's been reported that nearly 500 species of
insects are resistant to chemical pesticides.
-
MICROBE-LIFT/BMC is ideally suited
for the environmentally concerned consumer who can now take an easy
pro-active step to protect his family and pets against mosquitoes,
including those which may transmit the West Nile Virus.
