Now, more than ever, there is a significant public health concern about mosquito transmitted diseases to humans and pets. The West Nile Virus has been found in over 30 states in the U.S. The disease exploded in the year 2002 causing over 200 deaths and over 3,000 cases of the disease. Mosquitoes can also transmit diseases such as Equine Encephalitis and heartworm to dogs and cats.

The main culprit for the West Nile Virus is Calex pip/ens, a species of mosquito typically found in foul, stagnant water. Anything that may hold water, such as old tires, bird baths, rain barrels and abandoned pools need pro-active treatment to limit breeding. Anopheles mosquitoes, which transmit malaria, breed in water that is relatively clear all of the time.
